how much doesa website cost?

From a few hundred to tens of thousands: what websites cost in the UK and the US, what explains the difference, and what you'll pay after launch.

A £500 website and a £15,000 one aren't cheap and expensive versions of the same thing. One is a template you fill in yourself; the other is built to bring in customers.

what drives the price

Where the difference between two quotes usually comes from.

(01) Templates

Not the number of pages, but the number of different page types that need designing and building.

(02) Design

Adapting a theme costs less than a design built around your brand and your buyers.

(03) Content

If the agency writes the copy and sources photography, US guides put that at $1,000 to $5,000 or more on top.

(04) Integrations

A form that sends to your inbox is simple. Connections to your CRM, booking system or payments add cost per integration.

(05) Revisions

Most agencies include two or three rounds; extra rounds cost more.

(06) Strategy and measurement

Research, a structure based on search demand, and conversion tracking take time up front, and pay off after.

costs after launch

A website costs money when it's finished, too.

(01) Domain

Around £10 to £20 a year.

(02) Hosting

From a few pounds or dollars a month on shared hosting to £20 to £100 a month for faster, managed hosting.

(03) Maintenance

Updates, backups and monitoring: about £50 to £300 a month in the UK or $50 to $200 in the US for a custom site, or do it yourself.

(04) Improvement

New pages, campaign landing pages and conversion tests. After launch, this is where most of the gain is.

what we charge

Where we sit in those ranges.

(01) Brand and website

A new brand and a new website, launched together: from €8,500, usually in 8 to 12 weeks.

(02) Website only

Custom pricing after a short intake, once we know what the site needs to do.

(03) After launch

Ongoing improvement and conversion testing, as a monthly engagement or whenever you need it.

comparing quotes

Ask every agency the same five things, and you'll compare like with like.

  • What exactly is included: design, copy, images, integrations
  • How many rounds of revisions are included
  • Who handles hosting and maintenance, and what that costs a month
  • Whether you can edit pages yourself without the developer
  • Whether you get all files and access if you leave

questions

The questions we get asked most.

How much does a website cost for a small business?

In the UK, most small business sites from an agency cost £2,500 to £10,000; freelancers usually charge £500 to £3,000. US guides put a professional 5 to 10 page site at $3,000 to $8,000.

Why do website prices vary so much?

Because they're different products: a template you fill in yourself, or a site designed and built to bring in customers, with content, tracking and integrations.

What does an e-commerce website cost?

More than a business site: UK guides start around £10,000 and US guides at $10,000 and up, depending on catalogue size, checkout and integrations.

Are there monthly costs?

Yes: domain, hosting and usually maintenance. For a custom site, budget roughly £50 to £300 a month in the UK or $50 to $200 in the US for maintenance, plus hosting.
