Key takeaways
- You set the budget. Google charges per click on Search ads, through an auction held for every search. There's no minimum spend.
- Cost per click depends on the keyword. In our sample of 31 commercial keywords, US CPCs ranged from $1.09 (running shoes) to $170.62 (personal injury lawyer).
- UK clicks were cheaper for 28 of the 31 keywords, typically around half the US price.
- A useful budget buys enough clicks to produce conversions you can learn from. Work it out from your CPC and conversion rate, not from a round number.
- Management is a separate cost: agencies usually charge a fixed monthly fee or a percentage of ad spend.
how google ads pricing works
Every time someone searches, Google runs an auction among the advertisers bidding on that search. Your position is decided by your Ad Rank, which Google calculates from your bid, the quality of your ad and landing page (expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience), the minimum thresholds for showing an ad, the context of the search, and the expected impact of your ad assets.
You rarely pay your maximum bid. The actual cost per click is often lower: roughly what you need to hold your position and clear the thresholds. That's why a better ad and landing page can lower what you pay for the same position.
Search ads are charged per click. Video ads on YouTube are usually charged per view or per thousand impressions, and Display can be bought per click or per thousand impressions.
google ads cost per click by industry
We pulled Google's own keyword data for 31 commercial keywords across 10 industries, in the US and the UK. CPC is Google's historical average cost per click. The top-of-page range shows what advertisers typically bid to appear above the organic results: the low end is the 20th percentile of those bids, the high end the 80th.

Two patterns stand out. Clicks are expensive where one customer is worth a lot: legal cases, insurance policies, loans and business software. And clicks are cheap where the product is low-priced and many retailers compete on volume: shoes, furniture, travel.
what makes a click expensive
- What a customer is worth. Advertisers can afford to bid more when one sale is worth hundreds or thousands.
- Competition. More advertisers bidding on the same search pushes the price up.
- Location. In our sample, the same keyword usually cost around half as much in the UK as in the US.
- Intent. Searches close to buying ("plumber", "car insurance quotes") attract more bidders than research searches.
- Quality. A relevant ad and a landing page that matches it improve your Ad Rank, which can lower what you pay per click.
- Timing. Seasonal peaks and busy hours bring more competition.
how much should you spend?
Start from what a customer costs you, not from a round daily number. The maths is simple:
Cost per conversion = cost per click ÷ conversion rate. Monthly budget = conversions you want × cost per conversion.
An illustration: at $5 a click and a 5% conversion rate, each lead costs about $100. A budget of $10 a day is about $300 a month, or roughly three leads. That can be enough to test whether a search converts at all, but it's too little data for Google's automated bidding to learn much from. Automated bidding works better the more conversions it sees.
Two things about budgets surprise people. Google can spend up to twice your average daily budget on a busy day, but over a month you won't be charged more than your daily budget times 30.4, the average number of days in a month. And a campaign that's limited by budget all day is often better off narrowed (fewer keywords, locations or hours) than spread thinly.
For what it's worth: we usually work with advertising budgets from €1,500 a month. Below that, there's often too little data to optimise well, and we'll say so.
what management costs
The ad budget goes to Google. Running the account is a separate cost, whether that's your own time, a freelancer or an agency. Agencies usually charge a fixed monthly fee, a percentage of ad spend, or a combination.
A fixed fee has one advantage: the agency doesn't earn more when you spend more. Ours is a fixed fee: a one-off account audit is €495, and ongoing management starts at €750 a month. Whoever you work with, make sure the ad account stays in your name.
how to lower your cost per click
- Add negative keywords, so you stop paying for searches that never buy.
- Send each ad group to a page that matches the ad, not to your homepage.
- Track real conversions (leads, sales, revenue), so bidding optimises for customers, not form fills.
- Split brand and non-brand campaigns, so cheap brand clicks don't hide expensive ones.
- Narrow locations and hours to where and when you actually convert.
- Test ads continuously; a higher click-through rate improves quality and can lower your price.
questions
Is $10 a day enough for Google Ads?
It can be enough to test a narrow, cheap search, but in most commercial markets $10 a day buys only a handful of conversions a month: too little data for automated bidding. Work out your budget from your cost per click and conversion rate.
Is $20 a day good for Google Ads?
About $600 a month. At a $5 click and a 5% conversion rate that's around six leads a month. Whether that's good depends on what a lead is worth to you; in legal or insurance it may buy only a few clicks.
What's the average cost per click on Google Ads?
There's no meaningful single average: in our sample, US CPCs ran from $1.09 to $170.62. Look up the keywords in your own market in Google's Keyword Planner.
Is paying for Google Ads worth it?
When the searches have buying intent, conversion tracking is right and the landing page matches the ad, often yes. Measure it on cost per customer against what a customer is worth, not on clicks.
Will Google spend more than my daily budget?
On some days, up to twice your average daily budget. Over a month you won't be charged more than your daily budget times 30.4.
